KUCHING: An area of the Kuching North City Council (DBKU) has been recognised as a ‘Geopark’ area, more commonly known as the ‘Sarawak Delta Geopark’.

As a result, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg urged the community in Sarawak, especially those living in the DBKU area, to continue preserving environmental cleanliness despite facing rapid development.

“The DBKU area falls under the ‘Geopark’, namely the Sarawak Delta Geopark, which is on par with Langkawi and Perak.

“So, we have been recognised, and it will be a tourist attraction because it has its own value, and subsequently, we will plan so that eventually, this place will be recognised by the UNESCO Global Geopark.

“Hence, the people in Kuching must maintain cleanliness and aesthetic values as explained by the Mayor of DBKU earlier,” he said.

He said this while speaking at the Friendly Neighbourhood (KJM) appreciation dinner at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Wednesday night.

During the event, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also gave new recognition to the newly established KJM in the Kuching Old Town area and provided incentives as a token of appreciation to active KJM members and recognition to KJM chairpersons who set a good example.

Also present were the wife of Sarawak Premier, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, State Legislative Assembly Member (ADUN) Tupong Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, ADUN Satok Dato Ibrahim Baki, Mayor of DBKU Hilmy Othman, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
