Shipbuilding Industry Drives Sarawak's Economic Growth
SIBU: The Sarawak Government recognises the shipbuilding and repair industry as a strategic sector that can drive the state's economic growth, in addition to opening up job opportunities and empowering the development of local workforce skills.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the maritime sector not only contributes to economic figures, but also plays a role in ensuring that Sarawak's rivers continue to experience industrial activities and innovation.
"The government is committed to supporting local stakeholders through policies that promote growth, the provision of connecting infrastructure and the confidence that Sarawak is capable of becoming a maritime hub of excellence," he said.
He said this when speaking at the Launching Ceremony of the 28-Meter Tugboat SML 105 and the Handover of the 28-Meter Tugboat SML 103 at Tuong Aik Shipyard Sdn. Bhd. here, Monday.
The Pelawan Assemblyman added that the ships built were the result of the skills of Sarawakians, local workforce and a vision that extends beyond the state's waters.
Datuk Michael Tiang explained that the tugboat that was launched carried with it the pride of the workers, the resilience of the industry and a clear message that Sarawak is capable of building, delivering and competing globally.
He also expressed appreciation towards the contributions of the welders, engineers, designers, logistics team and all the individuals who made the construction of the vessel a success, describing them as the true backbone of Sarawak's maritime economy.
At the same event, SML 103 was handed over to its Indonesian partner, PT Transcoal Pacific, reflecting cross-border cooperation in the maritime industry.
"This is the true face of the industry - building trust, building quality and building bridges across rivers and across countries," he said. -UKASnews
