New RM250 Million RMC Drives Brain Gain, Strengthens Sibu As Regional Medical Hub
SIBU: The construction of the new RM250 million Rejang Medical Centre (RMC) is described as a major leap forward in Sarawak’s healthcare landscape, thus positioning Sibu as an important player in the medical tourism sector in the region.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, said the 250-bed tertiary hospital project has the potential to attract patients not only from all over Borneo, but also from surrounding regions.
According to him, the facility will not only increase the capacity of tertiary health services in Sibu, but also contribute to the decentralisation of specialist medical services throughout the state.
“It will not only increase the capacity of tertiary health services in Sibu, but also help decentralise specialist medical services throughout the state,” he said when speaking at the launch of the second phase of the construction of the New RMC here on Monday.
He said the new RMC would make it easier for residents from the interior including Kapit and along the Rajang Basin to access critical medical services with shorter travel times.
Commenting further, Datuk Michael Tiang stressed that this project could also be a catalyst for efforts to attract quality professionals to Sarawak, thus addressing the issue of the migration of local talent abroad.
Meanwhile, Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) Chairman, Clarence Ting said the development of the new RMC would not only provide high-class treatment facilities, but also have the potential to create more job opportunities for local residents.
According to him, RMC is expected to develop into a medical centre that not only provides treatment, but also acts as an institution that attracts medical professionals from Sibu and the surrounding areas.
Clarence also described the construction period of between two and three years as realistic and was optimistic that the project could be completed according to the set schedule.
Looking back at RMC's 23-year journey, he described its transformation from a maternity hospital to a large-scale hospital as a proud achievement and evidence of the progress of the health sector in Sibu. - UKASnews
