‘Tracing Our Roots’ Initiative To Strengthen Community Ties & Cultural Heritage
MIRI: The proposed implementation of the “Tracing Our Roots” programme is seen as a meaningful platform to strengthen community ties while preserving cultural heritage among the Chinese community in the state.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, said the initiative could be carried out by bringing association members back to their ancestral homeland in China to trace their family histories and reinforce familial bonds.
“This effort could also be expanded to stimulate bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, education and culture, including exploring the possibility of student exchange programmes aimed at nurturing a more competitive younger generation,” he said.
He made these remarks during a visit to the Chawan Association Building in Miri on Friday.
Meanwhile, the association’s Vice-President, David Yeo, informed that the proposal would be tabled at the upcoming Central Committee meeting to obtain agreement and support before any further planning is undertaken.
He also expressed hope that the initiative could be realised as early as next year.
At the event, Datuk Amar Dr Sim announced an allocation of RM10,000 as support funding for the association’s annual activities, thereby helping to strengthen the implementation of planned programmes and community initiatives. -UKASnews
