Parents Must Be Proactive In Ensuring Children Benefit From Free Education
BINTULU: Parents must act more proactively to ensure that children fully utilise the free tertiary education opportunities provided by the Sarawak Government to enhance academic achievement and the social mobility of the younger generation.
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said a student’s success depends not only on individual effort but that family support is also a decisive factor.
According to him, the free education scheme is open to all Sarawakians regardless of background and covers various fields, including science, accounting, and law.
“Therefore, children must be given attention and encouragement so that they study hard and achieve excellent results,” he said.
He said this during the Pengerami Ngabang Gawai Begulai Enggau Deputy Premier Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas ceremony organised by the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kakus Branch in Bintulu on Saturday.
He added that these opportunities can be utilised at Sarawak-owned higher learning institutions, such as i-CATS University College, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, and University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).
During the same event, 19 students received PBB education incentives for the year 2026, involving seven Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students, eight diploma students, and four degree students.
In a related development, he informed that the RM50 million Sungai Arip road construction project will be tendered this July to improve rural connectivity access.
He said the project involves the construction of a route from Sekolah Arip to Rumah Mambang, Rumah Laja, and Rumah Anas.
Also in attendance were the Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Law and Native Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Senator Michael Mujah Lihan, Selangau Member of Parliament Edwin Banta, and Jepak Assemblyman Iskandar Turkee.
