Bukit Assek Redevelopment Expanded For More Holistic Urban Planning
KUCHING: The Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan have been strategically expanded from the original 497 acres to 815 acres, encompassing not only Bukit Assek but also parts of Sibu town.
According to Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, the enlarged redevelopment area reflects a more holistic planning approach that integrates flood mitigation, transportation connectivity, infrastructure upgrading, riverfront enhancement, commercial development and residential planning under one coordinated master plan.
“This redevelopment is not merely about physical transformation, but also a major economic catalyst for Sibu.
“I am pleased to note that the master plan prepared by internationally renowned consultant Ramboll has officially received final approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA) on 28 January 2026.
“This marks a major milestone in Sibu’s urban transformation journey and demonstrates the Sarawak Government’s strong commitment towards comprehensive and long-term redevelopment planning,” he said.
He said this when debating the Motion of Appreciation on the address delivered by the Sarawak Governor during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Wednesday.
Joseph cautioned the development must place the people at the centre of planning, stressing that affordable resettlement housing must be properly implemented to ensure the affected residents can continue living in a conducive, accessible and affordable environment.
In this regard, he urged the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) to organise a comprehensive public exhibition on the master plan once it has been officially announced.
“Such engagement is essential to provide clarity to residents, landowners, stakeholders and the people of Sibu regarding implementation phases, timelines, redevelopment frameworks, flood mitigation strategies, resettlement planning and anticipated economic benefits,” he said. -UKASnews
