AirBorneo Ready To Strengthen Air Mobility Ahead of SEA Games 2027
KUCHING: AirBorneo is ready to play a major role in strengthening air mobility during the hosting of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2027 in Sarawak by increasing flight capacity and frequencies to several key destinations.
Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin noted that although the current capacity of the Sarawak-owned airline is limited, AirBorneo is firmly committed to helping ease passenger movement throughout the regional sporting event.
According to him, the airline is currently planning to operate three Boeing 737-800 aircraft for major routes, including Kuching-Kuala Lumpur and Kuching-Singapore.
“We definitely want to help bring more people into Sarawak in conjunction with the upcoming SEA Games.
“For the routes that we operate, AirBorneo will certainly be among the airlines involved during the SEA Games,” he said.
He said this during a press conference after his ministerial winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Monday.
Commenting further, he noted that AirBorneo's operations are currently still in the early phases of development, and the company's expansion is being carried out progressively based on current operational needs.
“We cannot do everything in a short period, but if there is a need for additional flights later, we will try to adjust our operations,” he explained.
In the same development, Dato Sri Lee disclosed that AirBorneo also plans to lease three Boeing 737-800 aircraft to expand its regional flight operations.
According to him, the aircraft will be utilised for the Kuching-Kuala Lumpur, Kuching-Singapore, Kuching-Jakarta and Kuching-Kota Kinabalu routes as part of the airline’s expansion strategy.
He added that the opening of these new routes is expected to help increase the arrival of visitors and overseas contingents for the SEA Games 2027 in Sarawak, while reinforcing AirBorneo's role as the state-owned airline. -UKASnews
