Sarawak Native Courts Institution Continues To Be Strengthened
KUCHING: The Sarawak Native Courts institution continues to be strengthened as an important mechanism in preserving customs, traditions and social harmony among the state’s multiracial communities.
Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai said the government remains committed to ensuring that the institution stays relevant, efficient and effective in delivering justice to the people.
According to him, as of April this year, out of a total of 18,799 cases registered since 1992 involving various categories including Adat violations, civil cases as well as applications for Bumiputera status verification and appeals, a total of 14,505 cases or 77 per cent have been successfully resolved.
“This achievement reflects the effectiveness of the Native Courts continuous efforts as well as the enhanced capabilities of community leaders and court personnel in managing disputes more efficiently,” he said.
He said this during his ministerial winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Monday.
He added that despite facing shortages in the number of magistrates at the district and resident levels, the Native Courts continue to carry out their responsibilities with full dedication in addressing the increasing number of cases throughout Sarawak.
According to him, various initiatives have been implemented to strengthen administration, including capacity-building programmes involving Community Leaders, Village Chiefs, court clerks and support personnel in selected districts.
“Since 2025, a total of seven capacity-building programmes have been organised involving 329 participants across various levels of administration, in addition to 10 engagement sessions held in several areas including Kapit, Miri, Sibu and Limbang involving 172 participants.
“These programmes emphasise understanding court procedures, record management and the use of the Native Courts system in a more systematic manner,” he explained. -UKASnews
