UNESCO Recognition Of Sarawak Delta Geopark Boosts State’s Global Standing
KUCHING: The recognition of Sarawak Delta Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) marked an important milestone in enhancing the state’s international reputation.
According to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Awang Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the status, officially granted in April 2026, makes the Sarawak Delta the first UGGp in Sarawak and the fourth in Malaysia to receive the recognition.
“The recognition marks a significant achievement for Sarawak, resulting from close collaboration between government agencies, technical experts, local communities and various stakeholders in fulfilling UNESCO’s assessment criteria.
“This proud achievement has enhanced Sarawak’s reputation within the international geopark network,” he said during his ministerial winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Wednesday.
The Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development added that several other areas in the state also possess strong potential to be nominated as UGGp sites in the future. -UKASnews
