SIBU: Efforts are underway for the Bukit Lima Nature to secure recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the largest peat swamp park within an urban area.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, stated that this recognition is expected to draw more visitors and generate spillover benefits for the local economy.
“This recognition is not merely symbolic; it will make Bukit Lima better known at the national level,” he told reporters after officiating the opening of the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve One-Stop Centre (OSC) here on Saturday.
Elaborating further, he said that spanning approximately 301 hectares, the park still preserves its well-maintained peat swamp ecosystem despite being located in the heart of Sibu town.
“The 2.6-kilometre trail stretching from the southern entrance to the northern entrance now allows full accessibility to the reserve area, subsequently opening up more recreational space for the community,” he remarked.
The Nangka Assemblyman also emphasised that the success of turning the park into a tourism destination heavily relies on the cooperation of visitors in maintaining its cleanliness and sustainability.
Therefore, he reminded the public to refrain from littering or smoking, as food remnants could attract wild animals, while cigarette butts pose a risk of triggering fires in the peat soil.
“This park belongs to everyone. Every visitor should treat it as their own property,” he added. — UKASnews
