Sarawak Maintains Reliable Power Supply Despite Prolonged Dry Spell
KUCHING: Sarawak’s overall electricity supply remains stable and sufficient despite the prolonged dry weather affecting water catchment areas across the state.
Sarawak Energy confirmed that robust operational planning and a strategic energy generation mix have enabled the power utility to effectively manage lower water inflows at its primary hydroelectric plants (HEPs).
Reduced rainfall in catchment zones since April 2025 has lowered water levels at the Bakun, Murum, and Batang Ai reservoirs.
To safeguard reservoir capacity during extended dry spells, Sarawak Energy has adjusted its generation strategy by moderating hydropower output and scaling up thermal power generation as required.
Under normal operating conditions, hydropower accounts for approximately 65 per cent of the state grid's electricity supply, with thermal generation providing 34 per cent and other alternative sources contributing the remaining 1 per cent.
Sarawak Energy continues to closely monitor hydrological conditions at all three dam sites in close coordination with key agencies, including the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), and the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).
Following two cloud-seeding operations conducted by the Sarawak Government via SDMC in May and June 2026, a third series of operations is tentatively scheduled from September 3 to 5 to encourage rainfall over critical catchment areas.
In light of the ongoing hot and dry conditions, consumers are advised to practice prudent electricity usage, particularly when operating air-conditioning and high-power appliances.
Customers equipped with smart meters can monitor their hourly and daily power consumption trends using the Energy Insights feature via the SEB cares mobile application or online portal.
