Haze: 647 Schools In 12 Districts Temporarily Closed From September 7-11, 2026
KUCHING: A total of 647 schools across 12 districts in Sarawak will be temporarily closed from September 7 to 11, 2026, following haze conditions that have affected air quality in several locations.
The Sarawak State Education Department (JPN) informed that the closure involves 563 primary schools with 108,477 pupils and 84 secondary schools involving 90,082 students under the administration of District Education Offices (PPD) in Kuching, Padawan, Bau, Lundu, Samarahan, Simunjan, Serian, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Kanowit, Julau, and Meradong.
“Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) sessions will be conducted throughout the temporary closure of schools affected by the haze phenomenon, in line with the provisions in the Ministry of Education Malaysia Circular Letter Number 8 of 2016; Disaster Management Guidelines for Teaching and Learning dated July 21, 2016.
“Any changes or updated information will be communicated from time to time,” JPN Sarawak stated in an official press release on Friday.
JPN Sarawak also reminded schools to adhere to standard operating procedures as well as guidelines set by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) regarding the health and safety of students in areas affected by the haze.
All educational institutions under the purview of JPN Sarawak are also advised to continuously monitor API levels through the Department of Environment’s Official Portal – Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), as well as comply with recommendations from the Ministry of Health Malaysia from time to time.
