Sarawak Performing Arts Centre Expected To Be Completed By June 2027, Ready To Enliven SEA Games
KUCHING: The Sarawak Performing Arts Centre is expected to be completed in June next year, paving the way for the historic complex to serve as a cultural performance venue for visitors and ASEAN heads of state during the SEA Games 2027.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that upgrade works for the old Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building has reached 46 per cent progress and is currently 1.6 per cent ahead of schedule.
Based on briefings by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak and consultants, he said the project is slated for completion in June 2027, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
“Indeed, I was briefed by JKR and the consultants that, subject to no delays, completion is expected in June 2027. The SEA Games will take place in September.
“Therefore, upon its completion in June, we can organise cultural performances during the SEA Games to entertain attending visitors and ASEAN heads of state,” he said.
He said this to reporters following a working visit to inspect the project's progress here on Friday.
According to Dato Sri Abdul Karim, the majority of the major challenging works have been accomplished, with execution now concentrating on interior design and finishing works.
He added that the complex comprises three main components: the performing arts centre, The Old Lapau which will be converted into a restaurant, and the former fountain site which will be upgraded as part of the complex's overall development.
He added that the area surrounding the complex is also envisioned as a public park to offer a recreational space for families.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim also expressed his appreciation to JKR Sarawak, the contractor consortium, and consultants for their commitment to ensuring smooth project execution while maintaining a zero-accident record at the construction site.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Morshidi Frederick. — UKASnews
