KUCHING: After nearly a decade at the helm of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), Datuk Sharbini Suhaili concludes his tenure with confidence that the company has now established a solid foundation and workforce ready to carry forward Sarawak’s energy development agenda.
Appointed as SEB Group Chief Executive Officer in November 2016, he stated that what resonates most with him upon leaving the role is not merely the achievements or project successes, but the workforce that serves as the organisation's driving force.
“When asked what I will miss most about my role as Group CEO of SEB, the answer is the people of Sarawak Energy.
“Whether at power stations, project sites, or in field operations, their dedication ensures the organisation continues to move forward,” he said.
He said this while delivering his farewell speech at an appreciation dinner held in conjunction with his upcoming retirement on 31 October, at a leading hotel here on Wednesday.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg also graced the event.
He also expressed his appreciation to Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari for the trust placed in SEB throughout his tenure.
He noted that SEB was entrusted with responsibilities extending beyond its traditional role as a utility company, including supporting full electrification targets, exploring hydrogen research, developing hydrogen refueling infrastructure and driving digital transformation.
During his leadership, Datuk Sharbini spearheaded the acquisition of the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant, strengthened Sarawak Energy’s financial position, maintaining both international investment-grade and domestic AAA credit ratings and instilled a robust health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) culture across the organisation.
Other notable recognitions achieved under his leadership include the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant receiving the Blue Planet Prize 2025 from the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and the Hydropower Sustainability Standard Silver Certification, reinforcing Sarawak Energy’s international standing in sustainable hydropower.
Meanwhile, Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad Dato Ruslan Abdul Ghani has been appointed as the incoming SEB Group CEO.
He is expected to assume the position beginning 1 September 2026 before fully taking over as Group Chief Executive Officer on 1 November 2026, following Datuk Sharbini's retirement at the end of October. -UKASnews
