MBKS Mayor Receives Taiwan University Delegation For Kenyalang Park Design Study
KUCHING: Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng received a delegation from Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), Taoyuan, Taiwan, who presented the findings of the Kenyalang Park Design and Community Engagement Project.
The project, supported by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), involved students from CYCU and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), who conducted field studies at Kenyalang Park, including the Traffic Garden, market and bazaar, from 1 August to 5 September 2025.
Through site observations, interviews and engagement with residents, the students studied the local environment, how different age groups use public spaces and the community's needs for recreational and social activities.
Based on their findings, the team developed two design concepts focusing on integrating greenery with public facilities to create comfortable and functional spaces for residents.
Dato Wee welcomed the findings, saying that the study would provide useful input for MBKS in planning future park beautification and upgrading projects.
He emphasised that park designs should not focus solely on appearance but must also consider local environmental conditions, population demographics, the way residents use public spaces and long-term maintenance requirements.
"Every park has its own environment and community needs. Before deciding on a design, we must understand who uses the park, how they use it and what facilities are suitable. A good park should not only look beautiful but also be practical, comfortable and accessible to everyone," he said.
He added that the integration of greenery, shaded seating areas and community spaces was particularly relevant to Kuching's tropical climate and would help encourage more residents, including children, families and senior citizens, to use public parks.
MBKS will study the possibility of adapting the proposed designs for Kenyalang Park, taking into consideration local climatic conditions, suitable materials, residents' feedback and future maintenance.
The project was led by CYCU in collaboration with UTS, with professional guidance from Arkitek JFN Sdn Bhd and financial sponsorship from Daitti Group of Companies.
The collaboration provides MBKS with practical design ideas that can be considered in its ongoing efforts to improve parks and public spaces in Kuching South. - UKASnews
