Two Projects Drive Target For Comprehensive Clean Water Supply In Krian By 2028
KUCHING: Residents across the Krian Constituency are targeted to enjoy access to clean and safe water supply by 2028 through the implementation of two strategic projects valued at RM425 million overall.
Krian Assemblyman Dato Friday Belik stated that the execution of both projects is expected to reinforce the existing water supply system, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents, particularly in rural areas.
According to him, the first project involves the construction of a water supply system to the Saratok District under the Proposed Water Supply System to Saratok District worth RM185 million, encompassing Ulu Sebetan, Brayang, Mudong, Tapang Ujan, and Kop Ibus.
He added that the second project entails upgrading the Kaki Wong Water Treatment Plant in Betong Division with an allocation of RM240 million to increase water treatment capacity from 30 million litres per day (MLD) to 60 MLD.
“With the completion of these projects later, the entire Krian constituency will receive clean water supply from JBALB by 2028,” he said.
He said this when debating the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting here on Friday.
Dato Friday explained that the execution of these projects is crucial to ensure rural residents enjoy better basic amenities, in line with efforts to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas.
In a related development, he also emphasised the importance of expanding telecommunication and internet coverage in Krian to enhance digital connectivity for residents.
Accordingly, he expressed hope that the RM309 million allocation via Alternative Funding in the Sarawak Budget 2027 for the construction of more telecommunication towers will also benefit areas in Krian still facing coverage issues.
He further welcomed the emphasis on rural development in the Sarawak Budget 2027, particularly efforts to strengthen basic infrastructure and public facility provisions.
In addition, Dato Friday views modern agricultural sector development and tourism as potential economic drivers capable of creating job opportunities and elevating local community incomes.
He noted that the continued execution of these development initiatives is hoped to reinforce Krian's economic growth in line with the development trajectory of Betong Division. — UKASnews
