86 Projects To Refurbish Dilapidated Schools In Sarawak Completed, Education Infrastructure Upgrades To Continue
KUCHING: Efforts to strengthen Sarawak’s education infrastructure continue to make progress, with 86 dilapidated school refurbishment projects fully completed through an RM1 billion advance funding.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the remaining 54 projects were at various stages of implementation to ensure safer and more conducive learning environments for school communities.
He said the initiative was crucial, given that 680 schools in Sarawak had been identified as unsafe for occupation, highlighting the need for substantial investment to upgrade and improve existing infrastructure.
“At present, 680 schools in Sarawak are classified as unsafe for occupation, highlighting the need for substantial investment in upgrading and improving school infrastructure throughout the state,” he said.
He was delivering his ministry’s winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting here on Monday.
Meanwhile, Roland Sagah said six of the 12 school projects under the Projek Rakyat initiative had also been completed, while the remaining six were either under implementation or at the pre-construction stage.
He said the Sarawak Government welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of RM1.3 billion under Budget 2027 to upgrade 682 dilapidated schools nationwide.
He expressed hope that Sarawak would receive a substantial share of the allocation to accelerate efforts to improve the safety, comfort and quality of educational facilities, particularly in areas requiring urgent attention.
At the same time, he urged the relevant authorities, particularly the Public Works Department (JKR), to expedite delayed projects, including the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Abang Leman project. -UKASnews
