Sarawak To Host Exhibition Of 5,000-Year-Old Egyptian Mummies
KUCHING: Sarawak will host the international exhibition 'Egyptian Mummies: Journey Towards Immortality', featuring 110 artifacts from the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, Italy, including actual 5,000 years old human remains.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Sarawak Museum Department will host the prestigious exhibition as part of efforts to broaden access to international historical heritage.
"The department will host the prestigious international touring exhibition, 'Egyptian Mummies: Journey Towards Immortality'," he said when winding up the debate for his ministry at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Tuesday.
He said the exhibition is the first international touring exhibition focusing on Ancient Egypt to be held in Malaysia, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the history and practices of an ancient civilisation through high-value archaeological collections.
In a related development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim said the Sarawak Museum Department began conservation work on the historic 'Tree of Life' mural at the Old Sarawak Museum Building on July 13, 2026, in collaboration with the National Visual Arts Gallery, in addition to carrying out phased restoration of exhibition spaces and historical specimens.
Meanwhile, he said the ongoing Fort Trail project involving Fort Lily, Fort Emma, Fort Brooke and Fort Hose is expected to be completed by the end of 2027 to ensure Sarawak's heritage continues to be preserved.
He added that the Sarawak Museum Department is also strengthening institutional expertise through the annual placement of Sarawak curators at the British Museum in the United Kingdom and the Musée du quai Branly in Paris, France, besides finalising memoranda of understanding with ICOMOS-Malaysia and the Museum of Ethnography Budapest. -UKASnews
