Sarawak To Strengthen Human Capital Via Free Tertiary Education Scheme From 2026
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government remains committed to developing a highly knowledgeable and skilled workforce, aligned with the state’s physical and economic development agenda.
In line with this, the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, announced that all Sarawakian students enrolled in state-owned universities will receive free education under the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) starting next year.
He noted that 64 undergraduate degree programmes have been identified for inclusion under the scheme, benefiting 10,000 students at a total cost of RM250 million.
“This scheme is open to all eligible students regardless of family income, proving the government's commitment to making education a basic necessity.
“By implementing this scheme, the government is not only investing in the future of individuals but also in the future of Sarawak by providing a highly educated, competitive workforce capable of driving a high-income economy,” he said in a special 2025 Christmas message on Wednesday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that the Sarawak Government is also committed to strengthening secondary education through the establishment of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary Schools (YSISS), in tandem with the FTES initiative.
He explained that this initiative represents a major step in the state’s educational strategy, offering the Cambridge Curriculum and aligning Sarawak’s education system with international standards. — UKASnews
