SERIAN: Sarawak continues to make steady progress across several key sectors, including the economy and digitalisation, thanks to the people of the state embracing the changes introduced by the Sarawak Government.
Citing digitalisation as an example, the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said that Sarawakians are now increasingly tech-savvy, with widespread use of smartphones, digital payment platforms such as Sarawak Pay (SPay) and QR codes, even in rural villages.
“This development reflects Sarawak’s advancement towards becoming a more modern and competitive region.
“If we look at China, most transactions are already cashless. We are moving in that direction as well. Although challenges remain, such as internet connectivity, efforts are underway to improve these facilities,” he said.
He was speaking at the Chinese New Year Dinner 2026 held here on Friday.
The Tarat Assemblyman added that education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), particularly in the fields of aerospace, electrical and electronic engineering, has also received encouraging interest from the younger generation.
“We want our children to pursue higher education, enrol in universities in Sarawak and venture into aerospace. Satellites today are no longer large and expensive; some are smaller, more affordable and quicker to develop. This is our future,” he said.
He added that these initiatives demonstrate the policies of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), which focus on serving all communities regardless of race or religion, particularly Sarawakians holding a MyKad with ‘K’ status.
Also present were Serian Division Resident Caroline Cleophas Joseph, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Damen Rejek, Serian District Officer Enting Nyami, Serian District Council Chairman Dato Peter Minos, heads of departments and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
