WFH Demands High Discipline, Not A 'Hidden Holiday'
KOTA SAMARAHAN: The implementation of a work-from-home (WFH) culture, following rising fuel prices due to conflicts in the Middle East, must be supported by high levels of discipline to ensure productivity remains preserved.
Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated that flexible working practices are not new and were proven effective during the COVID-19 pandemic when implemented with high commitment.
However, he stressed that this approach must not be misinterpreted as an opportunity to take advantage; rather, it requires individual responsibility in managing time and tasks.
“When we are not required to be in the office, it does not mean it can be considered a holiday. Even if we only go to the office three days a week, the other days must still be utilised as per a normal working day.
Individuals involved must discipline themselves when working from home, as that period should not be used to take the family on holiday, for picnics, or other personal activities, as this reflects an undisciplined attitude,” he asserted.
He said this when met by the media during a visit to the 2026 Kota Samarahan Aidilfitri Open House at the Samarahan Civic Centre on Saturday.
He added that technological advancements, including internet access and mobile devices, now allow various tasks to be carried out online without affecting service delivery.
Sector Specifics: However, he acknowledged that certain sectors, such as food services and hospitality, cannot fully implement WFH.
Tailored Approaches: Accordingly, he emphasised that every industry needs to adapt flexible working approaches based on their specific requirements to ensure effective implementation without compromising productivity. — UKASnews
