Pantai Damai Set To Emerge As Sarawak’s Strategic Tourism Hub
KUCHING: The Pantai Damai area continues to be strengthened as one of Sarawak’s main tourism hubs through the implementation of various strategic development projects focusing on infrastructure, education and tourism facilities.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the development of the area has been planned for over two decades and is now entering a more rapid implementation phase.
He noted that considerable progress has been achieved, particularly in the development and enhancement of tourism infrastructure at several key destinations, including Telaga Air, Damai, Santubong, Pasir Pandak, and Buntal.
He further stated that one of the new catalysts for development is the proposed upgrade of ICATS University College to full university status and to be situated in Kampung Terombol, approximately two kilometres from Telaga Air.
“Construction has started and is expected to be completed within two to three years on a 200-acre site.
“This development is set to reinforce the education sector and is expected to further stimulate tourism growth in the area,” he said.
The Pantai Damai Assemblyman further stated that coastal areas including Telaga Air, Kampung Sibu Laut, and Kampung Sungai Aur are being developed as ecotourism zones under the “Southern Belt of Tourism in Sarawak” initiative, which has been attracting a growing number of visitors, especially during weekends.
At the same time, the state government is planning the construction of two new main roads as extensions of the Pehin Sri Adenan Highway to improve access to the area.
“One route will serve as a two-way road to Kampung Telaga Air, while another will directly link to the university area in Kampung Terombol.
“This construction aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate access to the area,” he explained. -UKASnews
