Kuching South-Guro Student Exchange Strengthens International Friendship & Cultural Learning
KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) continues to strengthen its international collaboration and youth development efforts through the Kuching South–Guro Student Exchange Programme, which see 12 students from Kuching South travelling to Guro, South Korea from 30 March to 4 April 2026.
The programme is held under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MBKS and Guro City, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding, youth engagement, and global friendship.
Kuchign South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said that the exchange programme represents an important platform for young people to broaden their perspectives, build international friendships, and develop greater appreciation of cultural diversity.
This programme is more than just a visit. It is a meaningful learning experience that allows our students to immerse themselves in a different culture, interact with their peers and represent Kuching South on an international stage, he said.
Under the agreed framework, the student exchange is conducted on an alternating yearly basis, where students from Guro visit Kuching South in one year, and Kuching South students travel to Guro in the following year. This arrangement ensures sustained engagement and long-term partnership between both cities.
During the visit, the Kuching South delegation will participate in several key programmes, including a courtesy call and engagement session with the Mayor of Guro, strengthening city-to-city relations; a youth interaction session at the Cheonwangdong Youth Cultural Center, involving cultural exchange and dialogue with Korean students; and exposure to local culture, community activities, and educational experiences in Guro City.
Dato Wee further highlighted that the programme is aligned with MBKS ongoing commitment under the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), where Kuching South is currently recognised as a UNICEF Candidate City.
The Kuching South–Guro partnership continues to serve as a valuable platform for strengthening international cooperation while empowering the next generation through meaningful cultural exchange and learning experiences. an, Baram Member of Parliament Dato Anyi Ngau, Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, and SMK Long Lama Alumni Association Chairperson Margaret Uding Nawan. — UKASnews
