RM6 Billion Baram Agrovoltaic Project To Drive Rural Economic Transformation
MIRI: The Baram Agrovoltaic Project set to be developed in Temala is expected to become a major catalyst for rural economic transformation in Baram, further strengthening Sarawak’s position as a regional clean energy hub.
Telang Usan Assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau stated that the project, which is part of the Baram Renewable Energy Economic Zone, involves an estimated investment of RM6 billion.
According to him, the development is strategically planned at the Temala junction, connecting the Miri–Marudi, Mulu (Kuala Melinau), and Long Panai–Long Lama (MMMLL) road project networks.
Key components of the project include 1,500 hectares of modern agriculture, with 500 hectares dedicated to paddy cultivation to support Sarawak's food security; a RM380 million logistics hub; a RM300 million power station with a 300-megawatt capacity; and a RM310 million modern new township providing 600 residential units.
He made these remarks during a dinner ceremony held in conjunction with the 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of SMK Long Lama, which was officiated by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Openg.
Dato Dennis emphasised that the agrovoltaic project is not merely a solar energy development; rather, it encompasses a comprehensive ecosystem that combines renewable energy, modern agriculture, and rural infrastructure.
“This is not just a solar farm, but a development ecosystem capable of generating new economic opportunities for the local community,” he said.
The project is expected to create approximately 400 high-skilled permanent jobs and open up business opportunities for local residents.
Furthermore, he noted that the Baram Renewable Energy Economic Zone located near Long Lama has received state government approval and has the potential to generate energy capacity comparable to two major hydroelectric dams.
Commenting on the SMK Long Lama 60th Diamond Jubilee, the Patron of the school's Alumni Association highlighted that the institution plays a vital role in producing an educated generation in Baram.
He expressed hope that today's students would become the professionals of the future, such as engineers, modern farmers, and successful entrepreneurs.
Also in attendance were Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr. Ripin Lamat, Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Dato’ Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Baram Member of Parliament Dato Anyi Ngau, Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, and SMK Long Lama Alumni Association Chairperson Margaret Uding Nawan. — UKASnews
