Lebuk Melanau To Be Developed, Strengthening Heritage & Community Unity
KUCHING: The Sarawak government is set to construct ‘Lebuk Melanau’ or the Melanau House, estimated to cost at least RM55 million, as a new landmark to strengthen the heritage and community unity in the state.
Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh stated that the project, located at Wisma Melanau near the Islamic Information Centre (IIC), is expected to begin construction this year and is scheduled for completion by 2027.
According to him, the project has received initial approval from the State Planning Authority (SPA) and is currently in the documentation preparation phase before the tendering process in implemented.
“Lebuk Melanau will serve as a centre for community interaction and a venue for various cultural and social activities involving the Melanau people as well as other ethnic groups.
“However, the existing main building of Wisma Melanau will be retained to preserve the historical value and the legacy of past leadership for future generations to appreciate,” he said.
He said this when met by the media at the 2026 Aidilfitri Open House organised by the Sarawak Melanau Community Charitable Trust Board at the Royal Malaysian Customs Academy Kuching, on Saturday.
Commenting on the development costs, Datuk Len Talif explained that the state government will fund a portion of the expenditure, however, implementation must be expedited to avoid the implications of rising costs due to global economic factors.
Earlier, the open house successfully gathered over 500 guests from various ethnic backgrounds, reflecting the enduring spirit of goodwill and harmony among the people of Sarawak. -UKASnews
