NEU Talent Programme Promotes AI Awareness Among Students
KOTA SAMARAHAN: The ‘NEU Talent: Raya Bersama AI Programme’ successfully merged artificial intelligence (AI) learning with educational engagement on 30 and 31 March at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
According to a statement on Tuesday, the programme was jointly organised by UNIMAS AIOT, NEUON AI and the Sarawak AI Centre, with strong support from international collaborators, particularly from Taiwan, and led by Dr Annie Joseph as the Head of Programme.
“The programme was conducted under the guidance of advisors Associate Professor Ir Dr Kuryati Kipli and Ir Dr Kasumawati Lias, with the support of distinguished guests and Train-the-Trainer experts including Professor Lee Chang-Shing, Dr Wang Mei-Hui and Yue Chao-Cyuan from the National University of Tainan, as well as Mohd Hafiz Ismail from IEEE.
“Their involvement played a crucial role in delivering hands-on guidance, sharing expertise, and supporting capacity-building among participants and facilitators,” it said.
The first day focused on intensive workshop-based learning, introducing participants to key AI concepts through a structured approach of concept, experience, and operation-based learning.
The sessions were enriched by contributions from the TTT participants, comprising undergraduate students and staff, who guided participants through practical applications and real-world AI implementations.
“Topics include software data modelling using Google Colab, the Whisper Taiwanese TV model, knowledge and interface models, and fine-tuned models. Interactive components such as expression-based learning and experience sharing further enhanced the learning experience.
“The second day began with the grand opening ceremony at the Multipurpose Hall. The ceremony featured welcoming remarks by Chief Digital Officer Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim representing Vice Chancellor of UNIMAS Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit.
“Following the opening ceremony, the programme continued with a special workshop session dedicated to secondary school students, aimed at introducing them to fundamental AI concepts and applications.
“The session included a showcase tour and hands-on learning activities such as software and knowledge modeling, as well as exposure to fine-tuning techniques in an accessible and engaging manner,” the statement said.
The workshop saw active participation from several secondary schools, involving a total of 84 students and nine teachers.
The participating schools included SMK Muara Tuang, SMK Penrissen, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra National School (TUNAZ), SMK Pensantren, and Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS).
“Their involvement added vibrancy to the program and highlighted the importance of early exposure to artificial intelligence among school students.
“Overall, the program successfully provided a platform for participants to explore AI technologies, enhance practical skills, and foster academic and industry collaboration, while also inspiring younger students to develop interest in emerging technologies, all within the festive celebration of Hari Raya,” the statement said. -UKASnews
