KUCHING: In an increasingly uncertain global landscape, civil servants have been urged to serve as a pillar in safeguarding public trust, with unity as the core strength in all aspects of service delivery.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasised that unity is not merely a slogan but a continuous struggle that must be expressed through daily actions, particularly as the people face rising cost of living pressures and increasingly complex global challenges.
According to him, the priority now is not solely on festive celebrations, but on ensuring that public confidence in institutions and the civil service remains strong.
“This is not a battle fought with weapons, but a struggle to win the hearts of the people and to uphold their trust,” he said when speaking at the MBKS Gong Xi Raya celebration on Thursday.
The event was also attended by Deputy Mayor of MBKS Dato’ Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, Acting MBKS City Secretary Wong Ming Kong, MBKS staff and members of the public.
Elaborating further, Dato Wee said the concept of Gong Xi Raya, which combines the celebrations of Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, sends a clear message that unity in Kuching is not merely symbolic, but a fundamental principle that must be upheld without compromise.
“In a world that often divides, we choose to continue uniting,” he said.
At the same time, he noted that global economic uncertainty and international conflicts have a direct impact on the wellbeing of the public, thus requiring a higher level of efficiency, empathy and care among civil servants.
As such, Dato Wee emphasised that every action and decision, no matter how small, carries significant impact in building public trust and strengthening the relationship between the government and the community.
“Unity must be practised and upheld, while leadership is not about power, but about trust built every day,” he said. -UKASnews
