MATU: The public are advised not to engage in open burning and to remain vigilant following the hot weather conditions, which are expected to persist until July.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) and Jemoreng Assemblyman , Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, stated that actions such as indiscriminately discarding cigarette butts can trigger fires and threaten public safety.
“The public are advised to refrain from open burning and to avoid discarding cigarette butts indiscriminately, as such actions can pose a risk of fire.
“Prevention is better than cure, and the authorities will not hesitate to take action against individuals who defy these instructions,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the Matu District MAKSAK Kongsi Raya Aidilfitri Gathering 2026 on Friday.
In the meantime, Datuk Dr Juanda also expressed his appreciation to the Matu District Government Employees’ Welfare and Sports Council (MAKSAK), as well as all parties involved in making the programme a success.
He stated that the hosting of such events serves as an important platform for strengthening community ties and fostering a spirit of togetherness among the diverse ethnic groups in Sarawak.
He also noted that the new stage at the Matu Pavilion used for the event is now available for public use as a facility for various community activities in the future.
The event saw various government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) from around the Matu District setting up 'Raya booths' to enliven the festive celebrations. -UKASnews
