SMD Semiconductor Bootcamp Fosters Academic Excellence For Student Participants
KUCHING: SMD Semiconductor has officially concluded its 5-day SMD IC Design Competition (ICDC) 2026 Bootcamp, held at the SMD Academy.
The intensive programme marks a significant milestone in Sarawak’s mission to foster a world-class semiconductor ecosystem by bridging the gap between academic brilliance and industrial application.
Throughout the week-long event, the energy and innovation displayed by the participants were exceptional.
SMD Semiconductor had the privilege of meeting four dedicated teams representing Sarawak’s leading higher education institutions: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and Curtin University Malaysia.
The bootcamp focused on deep collaboration and advanced design thinking, preparing the participants for the complexities of the global tech landscape.
With the conclusion of this training phase, the competition now moves into its most critical stage: the Chip Design Phase.
These teams will transition from theoretical concepts to technical execution. They will undergo a series of rigorous design reviews facilitated by SMD’s internal experts to ensure all specifications meet the high standards required for fabrication.
“At SMD Semiconductor, we are not just building chips; we are building a tech legacy alongside Sarawak's best talent. The journey from a concept on a screen to physical silicon is a demanding one, and seeing these teams take their first steps toward fabrication at the SMD Academy is a testament to the potential of our local talent pipeline,” the group said in a statement.
As the journey to physical silicon continues, SMD Semiconductor remains committed to positioning Sarawak at the forefront of the global semiconductor industry by empowering the next generation of engineers. - UKASnews
