RRMF 2026 Expected To Boost Arts Ecosystem, Sibu Requires Riverfront Infrastructure Enhancement
SIBU: The Rajang River Music Festival (RRMF) 2026 is regarded not merely as an entertainment event but as a strategic catalyst for the development of the arts ecosystem and the transformation of Sibu into a destination for large scale events.
Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew said Sibu needs to provide more relevant and meaningful spaces for youth, particularly to support creativity and the development of local talent.
He added Sibu needs to offer something more meaningful to the youth that goes beyond their daily work and study routines while also ensuring spaces that can sustain creativity, particularly among the younger generation.
He made the remarks during his speech at the launch of RRMF 2026 held at RH Hotel on Tuesday.
He stated that the organisation of the festival demonstrates Sibu’s significant potential as an arts hub but it requires stronger infrastructural support to advance to the next stage of development.
At the same time, he emphasised the necessity of holistic riverfront development as a key catalyst for the organisation of large scale events in the future.
Senator Robert opined that with the successful completion of the riverfront development, the area could become a vibrant venue for large scale music festivals in the coming years.
He further stated that the development of a four to five-kilometre riverfront stretching from the Rajang Port Authority to Pulau Li Hua has the potential to transform the urban landscape while stimulating economic and tourism growth.
The RRMF 2026 which will be held on 1 to 2 May at Robert’s Wooden House is led by young organisers who have successfully assembled volunteers from both domestic and international locations including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
The development reflects the strong commitment of the arts community in building a more dynamic creative ecosystem in Sibu.
The festival offers admission tickets priced at RM99 per day and is expected to serve as an important platform in strengthening the local creative industry in a sustainable manner.
The statement reflects the need for a comprehensive approach combining infrastructure development and programme content to ensure Sibu remains relevant as an arts and cultural hub in Sarawak.
Also present were Deputy Chairman of the Sibu Rural District Council (MDLBS) Wong Ching Yong, Chairman of the Sibu Film Arts Practitioners Association Christopher Ling Jing and President of the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak Region Lucas Lau. -UKASnews
