Surging Demand At Miri Gawai Dayak Festival Fuels Local Economic Activity
KUCHING: An unexpected surge in demand for participation in the Gawai Dayak Bazaar and Ethnocultural Festival 2026 in Miri has resulted in the 79 available stalls being insufficient, reflecting the strong potential of the programme as a driver of the local economy.
Programme secretary Councillor Martin Dinil stated that the encouraging response from local entrepreneurs which has even led to a waiting list indicates strong interest in the economic opportunities provided.
“We have provided approximately 79 tents but this is insufficient as there are still many applicants on the waiting list who wish to take part,” he said during an interview at the UKAS Studio following the Juh Randau Programme on Tuesday.
He noted that the strong response reflects traders’ confidence in the festival’s ability to generate income while revitalising local economic activity.
In a related development, the organisers are targeting sales of up to RM2 million throughout the event, an increase from RM1.8 million recorded in the previous year.
“We expect sales to reach up to RM2 million,” he said.
He further stated that the festival which runs from 1 to 23 May is expected to attract visitors from all over Sarawak, given its statewide programme content.
“The activities organised are not confined to Miri alone but are open to participation from throughout Sarawak,” he said.
In the meantime, programme treasurer Dr Mary Calang stated that the Sarawak Government’s support through an allocation of RM1.5 million has strengthened the implementation of large scale programmes that provide direct benefits to the people.
“Without government support, a programme of this scale could not be implemented nor deliver returns to the people,” she said.
The festival which spans more than three weeks not only stimulates economic activity but also elevates cultural heritage as a high value asset that can be translated into new economic opportunities. -UKASnews
