Batang Baram Delta Dredging Project Boosts Maritime Access, Attracts New Port Potential
MIRI: Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki conducted a working visit to the Batang Baram Delta dredging project site in Kuala Baram, in preparation for Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg’s working visit this weekend.
The visit on Monday was an initial inspection before the arrival of the Sarawak Premier who is scheduled to visit the project site on 25 April, after officiating the Miri Division Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) 2026 Programme at Miri Stadium.
Also accompanying him were Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Administration) Datu Felicia Tan, Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) Director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan as well as consultants involved in the project implementation.
During the visit, the delegation was briefed by the Miri Port Authority General Manager Serawa Budol on the current status and progress of the implementation of the dredging project.
After the briefing session, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar and the delegation inspected the project area to see for themselves the dredging works that were being carried out using special machinery, including the movement of support vessels around the delta area.
The delegation was also taken on a boat from the project area in the delta to the Miri Port Authority Terminal, a journey that took approximately 50 minutes to get a comprehensive overview of the project implementation from a land and sea perspective.
He described the RM208.9 million project as a strategic and innovative initiative that has strong potential in boosting economic development in Miri, particularly in the maritime sector.
According to him, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari's visit on Saturday is expected to provide an opportunity to personally assess the progress of the project and obtain the latest information regarding its implementation.
For the record, the Batang Baram Delta dredging project aims to make Kuala Baram a strategic location for the development of seaports, thus strengthening maritime access and capabilities in the area. -UKASnews
