Traffic Control Prioritised, Free Bus Service Implemented To Address Congestion At SKS Miri Programme
KUCHING: Comprehensive and integrated measures will be implemented to ensure smooth traffic flow and visitor movement throughout the Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) 2026 Programme in the Miri Division from 24 to 26 April.
Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the expected attendance of thousands of visitors, particularly on the opening day requires careful planning for mobility and traffic management.
“We anticipate around 6,000 attendees during the launch ceremony.
“Therefore, we are also expecting traffic congestion and related issues,” he said during the Juh Randau Programme produced by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) at the UKAS Studio, Baitulmakmur Building on Tuesday.
In this regard, he stated that his ministry will provide two free special bus services as a primary measure to reduce traffic congestion and reliance on private vehicles.
“One will be stationed at the Pelita bus terminal while another will run from Boulevard to the open stadium with buses operating every half hour,” he explained.
He stated that the use of special buses will enable visitors to proceed directly to the programme venue without encountering difficulties in securing parking.
Dato Sri Lee further stressed that the use of public transportation is the most effective approach in addressing congestion for large scale programmes such as this.
“It would be better for visitors to park at one location and then take the direct bus service straight to the venue,” he said.
“Visitors are advised not to drive to the stadium as parking will be difficult to find so they are encouraged to use the bus service,” he said.
He stated that the integrated approach involving the provision of free transportation, security control and logistical coordination is regarded as a critical strategy in ensuring smooth traffic flow and supporting the overall success of the SKS Programme.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the SKS Miri Division Organising Committee who also serves as the Miri Division Resident Galong Luang stated that traffic control will be reinforced with the involvement of approximately 300 security personnel to manage vehicle flow and ensure the safety of visitors.
“We have requested about 300 police personnel to ensure the smooth movement of visitors,” he said.
He further stated that the Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) is also collaborating with e-hailing service providers to offer more affordable fares throughout the programme period.
“I am informed that the ministry has held discussions with e-hailing operators to provide reasonably priced fares throughout the three days period,” he added. -UKASnews
