MIRI: The Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant Project has reached 45 per cent completion as of March 2026.
According to the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUT), the 500MW power plant is targeted for completion by the end of 2027 and will utilise combined-cycle technology to deliver more efficient power generation for the Sarawak grid.
MUT Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi recently visited the project site to inspect progress and review key milestones.
Accompanying him were Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki and MUT Permanent Secretary Datu Jafri Lias.
The visit was hosted by PETROS, led by its Group Chief Executive Officer Dato Janin Girie and Vice President for Capital Projects Kidd Enau.
During the visit, the delegation was briefed on overall progress, key milestones and ongoing site activities, followed by a walkthrough of selected work areas.
“As Sarawak advances its energy transition towards a more reliable and lower-emission power system, MUT continues to prioritise the development of key infrastructure to support growing demand and long-term resilience,”the ministry said in a statement on Friday.
The visit concluded with a review of project status and upcoming priorities, reflecting steady progress towards strengthening Sarawak’s energy supply.
Meanwhile in the same statement, Dato Sri Julaihi said the Miri CCGT Project is an important step in strengthening Sarawak’s power infrastructure.
“It will support a more reliable and efficient energy system for the state,” he added.
He said PETROS is also strengthening local capability as part of the project through structured training and workforce development programmes aimed at preparing Sarawakian technicians and engineers for operations and maintenance roles.
Of the project’s total contractor workforce, around 36 per cent or more than 250 are Sarawakians, spanning skilled, professional, general, and semi-skilled roles.
In addition, PETROS has deployed more than 30 employees to the project, all of whom are Sarawakians.
As part of its talent development efforts, more than 20 young engineers and 88 technicians have been directly engaged through an on-site On-the-Job Training (OJT) programme, complemented by external collaborations designed to enhance technical competencies and industry readiness
“I commend PETROS for its continued efforts in developing local capability.
“These initiatives are important in ensuring more Sarawakians are equipped to support and sustain our energy infrastructure, while creating meaningful employment opportunities and contributing to Sarawak’s long-term economic growth,” Dato Sri Julaihi added.
MUT also emphasised the importance of continued coordination among stakeholders to ensure the timely and safe delivery of strategic infrastructure in support of Sarawak’s long-term development and energy security. -UKASnews
