Venue Preparations For 2027 SEA Games In Sarawak Sees Encouraging Progress
KUCHING: The preparation of sports facilities in Sarawak for the hosting of the 2027 South East Asian Games (SEA Games) is showing encouraging development and is on the right track according to the set schedule.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, stated that findings from his official visit to several key venues showed that upgrading and construction works are being actively carried out with good progress.
Among the locations inspected were the Sarawak Stadium, the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, and the Stadium Perpaduan, which form part of the state's main sports complex.
“Overall, the project progress is very good and adheres to the original schedule. We hope all works can be expedited and completed according to the established timeline,” he said during a press conference during the visit on Tuesday.
He also informed that Sarawak plays a vital role as a co-host, as it will host the opening ceremony of the games as well as the venues for 17 out of the total 38 sports contested.
He noted that the Sarawak Government has allocated approximately RM350 million for the hosting of the games, in addition to around RM280 million for the upgrading of sports facilities, bringing the total commitment to RM630 million.
“The Sarawak Stadium is expected to be completed and handed over in January 2027, while the overall upgrading of sports facilities in the state is expected to be fully completed around May or June 2027,” he explained.
He added that the period of approximately three to four months before the games begin in September 2027 will be utilised to ensure all technical and logistical aspects are at an optimum level.
Dr. Mohammed Taufiq also expressed confidence in the Sarawak Government's commitment to ensuring the 2027 SEA Games run smoothly and achieve the best standards.
During the visit, the delegation was provided with detailed briefings by relevant agencies, including the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC), regarding the current status of projects, technical specifications, and venue readiness.
The official visit reflects the close cooperation between the Federal Government, the Sarawak Government, and the organisers in ensuring every sports facility meets international standards and is fully completed on schedule. — EDISI UKAS
