2027 SEA Games More Than Just Sports, Set to Become Rakyat's Festival
KUCHING: Hosting the 2027 SEA Games will not just focus solely on sporting events but also be highlighted as an inclusive and vibrant people's festival, said Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Mohamed Taufiq Johari.
He stated that the concept aims to attract broader participation from the community, including those who may not follow sports competitions directly.
According to him, following discussions with the Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, several key locations such as the Sarawak Stadium will be enlivened with various side activities.
“At the Sarawak Stadium itself, there will be festivals, sales, booths, and exhibitions so that those who come are not just focused on the sporting events.
“In fact, some may come simply to bring their families to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, without needing to watch the sports,” he said during a press conference following a site visit to the Sarawak Stadium on Tuesday.
Dr. Mohamed Taufiq added that this approach is seen as a way to make the biennial games more inclusive while serving as a social platform that connects communities from all walks of life.
He said the initiative would also provide added value to the visitor experience, further igniting the excitement of the 2027 SEA Games in Sarawak.
The official visit was also joined by Dato Sri Abdul Karim; Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee; Permanent Secretary of the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dzulkornain Masron; Vice President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and Sarawak Chef de Mission for the 2027 SEA Games Azizul Annuar Adenan; Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) Dato’ Abdul Rashid Yaakub; Director of the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department Lamat Nyalau; and Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak Sports Corporation and Acting Director of the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) Khairul Nizam Morshidi. — UKASnews
