275kV Bakun–Murum Transmission Line Project To Bolster Sarawak’s Power Grid Resilience
BELAGA: Efforts to strengthen Sarawak’s electricity supply system continue through the implementation of the 275kV Bakun–Murum Transmission Line Project (Circuits 3 and 4), a key catalyst in enhancing grid resilience while ensuring a more stable and reliable energy supply in Sarawak.
A symbolic ceremony marking the project’s progress was held through the traditional ‘Pela Daleh’ ritual at the Murum Junction Substation as a sign of respect for the customs and culture of the Orang Ulu community.
The ceremony, organised by the Belaga District Office in collaboration with Sarawak Energy, was officiated by Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang, and attended by Murum Assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.
Also present were SEB Power Chief Executive Officer Ir Bunyak Lunyong, Belaga District Officer Bidah Lujah, representatives from government agencies and local community leaders.
Meanwhile, Bunyak said the project is a strategic step in strengthening the stability of the state’s power grid system, thereby ensuring a more consistent power supply for domestic and industrial users.
“This project not only enhances grid capacity, but the Pela Daleh ceremony also reflects Sarawak Energy’s commitment to respecting the customs and culture of local communities while strengthening ties with them,” he said when speaking at the ceremony on Wednesday.
He added that the approach is in line with the company’s social investment efforts, which also emphasise the preservation of cultural heritage and community development.
As a continuation of the initiative, the Pela Daleh ceremony will also be held at several longhouses including Uma Badeng, Uma Nyaving, Uma Apan, Uma Sambop Long Semutut, Uma Sambop Batu Pilau and Rumah Kejaman Lasah to ensure inclusive community participation.
The project, stretching approximately 21.2 kilometres, involves the construction of a 275kV dual-circuit transmission line connecting the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) to Murum Junction.
Since commencing in December 2025, the project had achieved 8.64 per cent progress as of March 2026.
The initial phase of implementation focuses on engineering works, route clearing and comprehensive soil studies, with completion targeted by November 2027.
The expansion of the transmission network plays an important role in improving system stability and reducing the risk of large-scale supply disruptions, while ensuring that the 2,520 megawatts (MW) generated by the Bakun HEP can be transmitted more efficiently.
At the same time, Sarawak Energy will continue to strengthen cooperation with local communities and stakeholders to ensure the project’s implementation proceeds smoothly and provides lasting benefits for the wellbeing of the people. -UKASnews
