Kuching’s Landmarks To Light Up In Support Of International Thalassaemia Day
KUCHING: A special lighting ceremony will illuminate the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex in red to raise public awareness about thalassaemia and support related advocacy efforts on 8 May 2026 at 7.30 pm, symbolising global attention and support for thalassaemia.
According to a statement by Sarawak Thalassaemia Society, the Kuching Darul Hana Bridge will once again join this meaningful initiative for the second consecutive year, alongside the Satok Suspension Bridge, both of which will also be lit up in red to reinforce a unified message of awareness and solidarity across Kuching.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Grit Event Management for their invaluable assistance in facilitating communication and coordination for this initiative.
“We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Office of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly for their strong support and collaboration in making this initiative possible.
“Their commitment plays a significant role in amplifying awareness and advocacy efforts for thalassaemia in Sarawak,” it said.
The Sarawak Thalassaemia Society also extended their appreciation to the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for their continued support and cooperation, especially in enabling the Kuching Darul Hana Bridge to once again participate in this awareness campaign for the second year.
International Thalassaemia Day is observed annually on 8 May, with the aim of raising global awareness about thalassaemia and promoting advancements in research, treatment, and patient support.
Activities and advocacy efforts worldwide focus on the impact of the disease on patients and families, as well as the importance of early screening and prevention.
Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce normal hemoglobin, leading to conditions such as anemia, fatigue, and developmental delays. -UKASnews
