Establishment Of Ombudsman Special Select Committee Strengthens Sarawak Governance
KUCHING: The establishment of the Ombudsman Special Select Committee is seen as an important step in strengthening the integrity, transparency and accountability of public administration in Sarawak.
Tellian Assemblyman Royston Valentine said the motion tabled by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya reflects the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to empowering a more efficient and transparent governance system.
According to him, the committee not only fulfils the requirements under the Sarawak Ombudsman Ordinance 2023, but also serves as a check-and-balance mechanism to ensure that every recommendation and report by the Ombudsman receives serious attention from government agencies.
He said the approach is important in addressing issues of maladministration and improving weaknesses in the public service delivery system for the benefit of the people.
“The Ombudsman institution is not merely a channel for receiving public complaints, but symbolises a mature and responsible government that is willing to be held accountable,” he said when debating the motion during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.
He added that an effective Ombudsman can serve as a bridge between the people and the government to ensure every administrative decision is made fairly, transparently and based on the overall interests of the people.
Royston also stressed that the public today no longer judges a government solely based on physical development, but also on the level of integrity, efficiency and honesty in government administration.
He added that a successful government is one that has a strong check-and-balance system and is willing to undertake open improvements for the wellbeing of the people.
He believes that strengthening the Ombudsman institution will enhance public confidence in the government administration while reinforcing a culture of accountability and good governance in Sarawak. -UKASnews
