Deep-Sea Port Development Has Potential To Create New Land, Opening New Economic Opportunities
KUCHING: The development of deep-sea ports in Sarawak has the potential to create new land formations resulting from natural siltation processes, which can be leveraged for future development.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg stated that the siltation phenomenon in deep-sea areas can form new land areas over the long term, subsequently opening up space for new economic developments.
“When we develop areas at sea, land will be formed through the process of siltation, and that area will become new land.
“That land can be sold, so it can be used to recover the development costs,” he said when speaking at the Kuching Port Authority (KPA) 65th Anniversary Anniversary Dinner at a leading hotel here on Friday.
The Premier added that a visit to a deep-sea port site in Miri showed that the formation of new land occurs naturally in nearby areas and can be capitalised on for various developments.
He hinted that such new land areas have the potential to be developed with various infrastructure, including commercial and tourism facilities, in the future after 10 to 15 years of this natural siltation phenomenon.
According to him, the same situation is likely to happen in Kuching when deep-sea port development is carried out, where siltation will occur continuously until it creates stable new land areas.
“Now that we have a lot of technology, we might be able to construct buildings on that land,” he explained. -UKASnews
