KUCHING: The proposed development of a large-scale agropark in the Beladin and Buda areas is seen as capable of becoming a catalyst for the transformation of the modern agricultural sector and rural economic development in Sarawak.
Beting Maro Assemblyman Dato Razaili Gapor, stated that the large-scale agropark development could be a catalyst to the transformation of the rural agricultural sector.
According to him, the proposed project involves an area of approximately 10,000 hectares in Beladin and Buda areas, which will feature modern agricultural concepts and smart technology.
He noted that the agropark will not only focus on large-scale commercial farming but will also integrate elements of research and development (R&D), digital technology, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications into the agricultural sector.
“This agropark can open up opportunities for the youth to utilise digital technology and IoT applications in smart and precision farming,” he said.
He said this when debating the Motion of Appreciation on the address delivered by the Sarawak Governor during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Friday.
Dato Razaili said the government could attract agro-companies with capital, technology, and expertise to play the role of 'anchor companies' in cooperation with local farmers.
According to him, the development of this high-tech Agropark has the potential to attract industrial investments, in addition to boosting agricultural yields for both domestic demand and export.
He added that this step aligns with Sarawak's agenda to strengthen food security and promote rural economic development based on modern agricultural technology and innovation.
“The development of a high-tech, large-scale agropark will attract industry players to invest, thereby contributing to increased agricultural production, particularly food products for domestic needs and export markets,” he said.
He emphasised that the agricultural sector must be strategically empowered to become one of the state's main economic drivers in the future, while ensuring Sarawak’s continuous food security. -UKASnews
