Bintulu Has Potential To Become A Space Energy Cell Manufacturing Hub
KUCHING: Bintulu has the potential to emerge as a manufacturing hub for a new generation of energy cells capable of generating electricity, positioning Sarawak within the global value chain of future energy technology development.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said that research is currently being actively conducted worldwide to develop space-based electricity generation technologies that do not rely on conventional batteries.
According to him, these studies focus on developing technologies that harness sunlight to produce electrons and subsequently generate electrical energy.
“That is why we need to prepare our skilled workforce for this technology. God willing, Sarawak will produce cells that are capable of splitting light to generate energy, with production planned in Bintulu,” he said.
He said this while delivering his speech at the launch of the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2026 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here on Saturday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that although the technology is being developed through collaboration with South Korea, the initiative also involves the transfer of knowledge and expertise related to the use of semiconductor wafers, which play a crucial role in converting light into electrical energy.
He further explained that the move would help reduce future dependence on fossil fuels for electricity generation. -UKASnews
