Sarawak Government To Provide Incentives Encouraging School Participation In NREB's PALS
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has agreed in principle to provide incentives to schools participating in the Environmental Lovers Club (PALS) Programme under the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) initiative, in an effort to strengthen environmental education and awareness among the younger generation.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the move reflects the government's commitment to expanding the establishment of environmental clubs across the state, fostering a culture of conservation and environmental sustainability right from the school bench.
According to him, the programme driven by NREB needs to be further empowered until it achieves its target of involving approximately 1,400 schools throughout Sarawak.
“Whichever school sets up the club, we will channel some incentives to them to help fund the execution of activities related to environmental conservation,” he noted.
He said this while speaking at the NREB Excellence and Service Awards Ceremony here on Friday.
Although he did not disclose the exact amount of the incentives to be channelled, he emphasised that instilling environmental awareness from a young age is crucial to ensure future generations continue to appreciate and preserve Sarawak's natural treasures.
“I agree in principle with this proposal, while we will work out the amount later, as the proverb goes, 'melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya' (to bend a bamboo, start from its shoot).
“So if we want to 'bend' the environment, let it begin from when they are young,” he added.
He also described students' involvement in environmental activities as the best platform to shape a society that is more responsible toward natural resource conservation and the sustainability of the state's future development. -UKASnews
