Over 7,000 Participants Enliven Sibu SKS Closing Through Fun Run & Walk
SIBU: The extraordinary response from the public towards the Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) 2026 programme at the Sibu Divisional Level was evident as more than 7,000 participants flooded the Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang Square to join the Fun Run and Fun Walk, which served as the main highlights on the final day of the event.
The turn-out, which surpassed initial targets, reflects the solid support from a multi-racial community of all ages towards the Sarawak Government's initiatives that emphasise public wellbeing and community involvement.
The flag-off ceremony for the participants was performed by the Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, alongside the Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operations), who is also the Chairman of the SKS Committee for the Sibu, Sarikei, Mukah, and Betong Divisions, Datu Hii Chang Kee; Sibu Divisional Resident, Superi Awang Said; as well as heads of departments and community leaders.
Datu Hii stated that the response received was highly encouraging, prompting the organisers to reopen registration to meet public demand.
"Initially we set a specific target, but due to the overwhelming response, we opened up registration again, and now the number of registered participants has exceeded 5,000 people.
"We would like to thank the entire Sibu community for such encouraging support and participation in the Sarawakku Sayang Programme, especially today's Fun Run and Fun Walk events," he said when met by reporters on Sunday.
The recreational event saw participants traversing routes around the Sibu town centre in a lively atmosphere, subsequently fostering a healthy lifestyle while strengthening ties between the public and government agencies.
In addition to the run and casual walk, the event grounds were further enlivened by the Aerobicthon Challenge 2026, which gathered hundreds of participants in group fitness activities.
The three-day Sibu Divisional Level SKS Programme 2026 drew to a close today after featuring various segments, including government service deliveries, exhibitions, community activities, and health programmes that received an enthusiastic response from the local community. — UKASnews
