JELUKONG: There is a need to develop sufficient Rest and Service Areas (RSAs) facilities along Sarawak's primary transport corridor to provide safe, comfortable, and convenient resting spots for motorists during long-distance travel.

Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin emphasised that driver fatigue remains a key factor in road accidents and urged drivers to make full use of laybys and RSA facilities.

"Driver fatigue remains one of the contributing factors to road accidents, particularly on long-distance routes. I encourage all road users, especially those travelling long distances, to stop and rest whenever they feel tired instead of continuing their journey.

“A short rest can go a long way in preventing accidents and ensuring everyone arrives safely at their destination," he said.

He made these remarks during a site visit to the Jelukong RSA along the Pan Borneo Highway on Monday to review its operations and existing facilities.

During the inspection, the Minister was briefed by Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak officers on the operational status and maintenance of the Jelukong RSA before touring the premises to identify potential upgrades for user comfort and safety.

The visit follows a recent engagement session held by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) with transport industry stakeholders regarding the planning and enhancement of highway rest stops.

Dato Sri Lee reaffirmed that MOTS will continue collaborating with JKR Sarawak and relevant agencies to ensure all RSAs along the Pan Borneo Highway remain functional, well-maintained, and safe for all commuters.

Also present during the site visit was Deputy Minister for Transport Sarawak Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, alongside officers from MOTS and JKR Sarawak. - UKASnews
