MIRI: Sarawak will explore the development of low-starch rice varieties through ongoing research efforts aimed at producing value-added products while meeting the growing demand for healthier food options.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the variety is among the potential developments being pursued through research collaboration with Yunnan University, China.
He said the development of the new variety would not only cater to health-conscious consumers but also has the potential to be marketed internationally.
He said this in a press conference after officiating at the Harvesting Ceremony of the Perennial Rice Variety Planting Project in Kuala Baram here on Thursday.
He added that research into perennial rice varieties would continue to be strengthened through collaboration between the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA), Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Borneoland Paddy Sdn. Bhd. and Yunnan University. -UKASnews
