KUCHING: The Land and Survey Sports Carnival (LASSCAR) 2026 is not just an arena for competition, but also acts as a platform for human capital development in strengthening the culture of teamwork, discipline and integrity among civil servants.
Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that values applied through sports such as discipline, leadership, resilience, communication and team spirit must be translated into the implementation of duties and trust in the workplace.
"LASSCAR is not just about who wins and who loses. LASSCAR is about how we work as a team with integrity, respect our opponents, rise when faced with defeat and bring that spirit of equality back to the workplace in the public service," he said.
He said this when officiating LASSCAR 2026 which entered its third series at the Jubilee Sports Ground here on Tuesday.
According to Datuk Len, a tournament such as this gives participants space to build discipline, learn leadership, accept wins and losses as well as improve on weaknesses, all of which are important values in forming quality employees.
According to him, the culture of teamwork, communication and mutual trust is crucial to ensure that every government responsibility can be carried out more effectively.
"If we can be disciplined on the field, we must be disciplined in the office. If we can work as a team in competitions, we must also work as a team in carrying out the government's mandate," he explained.
In the meantime, he said, the culture of active and healthy living should continue after the sports carnival to ensure that employees are not only productive, but also maintain a good level of health and fitness.
According to him, physical activities such as brisk walking can be practiced consistently as part of a healthy lifestyle and the culture of working people's lives.
At the same time, Datuk Len said the experience of managing and participating in LASSCAR 2026 can be used as a preparation for facing greater responsibilities in organising the SEA Games in Sarawak.
He said that Sarawak will be one of the clusters hosting the SEA Games from 18 to 29 September 2027, with the Sarawak Land and Survey Department entrusted as the warden of the Thai contingent.
LASSCAR 2026 involved more than 1,500 participants from the Sarawak Land and Survey Department (JTS), Ministry for Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR), the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM) and the Sarawak Land Surveyor Board.
In the 2026 LASSCAR parade, the MUDeNR Contingent emerged as the champion, followed by the Kuching JTS Contingent as runner-up, while the Bintulu JTS Contingent came in third.
The games also served as a space to strengthen ties and the spirit of camaraderie between the personnel of the agencies involved, in addition to promoting a healthier work culture and teamwork.
Also present were MUDeNR Permanent Secretary Datu Abdullah Julaihi, JTS Sarawak Director Datu Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood and Sarawak Topographic Mapping Division Survey Director LSr Sylvester Luta Buli. -UKASnews
