KUCHING: The haze conditions currently affecting several regions are not expected to disrupt the organisation of the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) XXII Selangor 2026.
Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that the haze is not only occurring in Sarawak, but also involves Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore depending on wind direction.
According to him, the Air Pollution Index (API) readings in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are currently still moderate compared to conditions experienced in Sarawak.
“If we look at the situation in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, where SUKMA will be held, the API readings are not as bad as what we are currently experiencing in Sarawak.
“I don’t think the situation is especially worrying and we hope the haze problem does not get worse during SUKMA,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the Send-Off Ceremony of the Sarawak Contingent to the SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 at the Kuching International Airport on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Dato Sri Abdul Karim advised Sarawak athletes to take precautions, particularly those who will be competing in outdoor events such as on fields and tracks.
He explained that athletes suffering from sinus problems or are sensitive to haze conditions are advised not to stay in open areas for too long in case the situation worsens.
“My advice to athletes, especially those who will be competing in open areas, on the field and on the track, is to always take precautions,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak Contingent for SUKMA XXII involves more than 900 athletes and officers.
According to the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts more than 60 members of the contingent departed on Wednesday using AirBorneo services, which are also among the corporate partners assisting the Sarawak Contingent in its preparations for the Games.
He said that AirBorneo's involvement in transporting the contingent also reflects the corporate sector's support for efforts to ensure the Sarawak Contingent's preparations run smoothly.
