KUCHING: Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad has handed over business zakat amounting to RM692,000 for the financial year ending 31 December 2025 to Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS), as part of the banking institution’s ongoing commitment towards the development of the Muslim community in Sarawak.

The zakat presentation was carried out by the Chairman of Bank Islam Group’s Shariah Supervisory Council, Ir Dr Muhamad Fuad Abdullah, to the President of the Sarawak Islamic Council, Datuk Misnu Taha.

The ceremony was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at Satria Pertiwi Complex on Friday.

Bank Islam Group Chief Shariah and Sustainability Officer Mohd Nazri Chik said the zakat payment reflects Bank Islam’s continued commitment to the Sarawak community since the bank began operating in the state in 1984.

He said the year-on-year increase in zakat contributions was also influenced by the continued support of the people of Sarawak towards Bank Islam, as well as the growth of Islamic banking operations in the state.

Meanwhile, he said the meeting with the Sarawak Premier also discussed potential cooperation between Bank Islam and the Sarawak Government in strengthening the waqf sector.

He added that Bank Islam welcomed the establishment of the Sarawak Waqf Foundation last year as a new entity alongside TBS and was ready to support the state government’s aspirations to expand waqf development.

“The aim is for Bank Islam to collaborate with the Sarawak Government to develop flagship projects that not only benefit the people of Sarawak but also encourage the perception that waqf should not remain limited to the development of mosques, burial grounds and similar purposes, but should also create a greater economic impact for the people,” he said when met by the media after the zakat presentation ceremony.
