KUCHING: Sarawak is collaborating with South Korea to develop a satellite chip technology production facility in Bintulu, which is expected to create job opportunities for 500 Sarawakian engineers.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the collaboration aims to produce chips capable of converting sunlight into energy for use in satellites.

“Sunlight will be converted into energy to be used in satellites. Within the satellite, there are chip components, and this is what we aim to produce in Bintulu.

“This will be the first of its kind in the world, and hopefully, within three years, it will be successfully realised,” he said.

He said this when officiating the Sarawak Youth Week 2026 celebration at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan on Saturday.

According to Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, the facility is currently being developed and is expected to be completed within three years, around 2029.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media after the ceremony, the Sarawak Premier said the collaboration would also involve local higher learning institutions, including Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, through industrial training programmes.

He said students who complete their studies would have the opportunity to be absorbed as engineering personnel to support the production of the chips.

“Upon completing their studies, they can be recruited by the company as engineers involved in chip production,” he said. -UKASnews
